If you’re familiar with YENSA Beauty, then you know that we’re all about a radiant, glowing complexion. Specifically, the superfood-induced kind! Taking care of your skin involves so many different factors— one of those being exfoliation. Exfoliating your skin is one of the easiest ways to clear your pores and scrub away all of the dead skin cells to reveal that luminous glow that’s been dying to say hello.

But before you get your glow on, here are a few things that you need to know about how to properly exfoliate your skin:

Exfoliating is NOT the same as cleansing.

You may already know this, but if you don’t then listen up! Exfoliating your skin is not the same thing as cleansing— although both are very essential. A cleanser cleans your skin, removing surface level impurities and oils. Exfoliating on the other hand removes dead skin cells that are trapped in your skin’s surface and pores to reveal a fresh, healthier layer. It’s important that you always cleanse before going in with an exfoliator so that you don’t trap any makeup or oils in your pores. This can give you a one way ticket to some serious acne!

Don’t overdo it!

We know how satisfying it can be to scrub away the outer residues of the skin’s surface to reveal a smooth, glowing texture. However, it’s important to note that you should not be exfoliating more than 4 times a week. Over-exfoliating will trick your skin into thinking it needs to produce more oils, thus leading to a higher chance of getting acne.

Be mindful that exfoliating should leave you with a dewy, natural highlight. If your skin starts to become shiny, do not misinterpret this as a good thing! If this begins to happen to you, give your skin a little week-long break from all of the scrubbing and let it return to its balanced and nourished self.

Find what works best for you.

Everyone’s skin is different— but you already knew that! Finding the perfect exfoliating technique that flows with your skin type is one of the most important things when it comes to maintaining a healthy texture. If you start out with a heavy exfoliant, you may be at risk of redness, irritation and not-so-cute rashes.

Our fellow YENSA muses have found that their skin is loving the Pumpkin Turmeric 2-in-1 Polishing Mask. This lightweight and exfoliating formula polishes and resurfaces skin in only 5-10 minutes and is infused with 8 orange skin-loving ingredients to help nourish and polish the face for a hydrated, smooth, supple and radiant texture.

Keep your skin hydrated.

While your complexion may feel and look its best after a nice exfoliation session, it’s crucial that you always (always… always!) moisturize afterwards. Removing the skin’s outer layer also removes the properties that help keep your skin happy and hydrated— which can lead to a new cycle of drying and flaking. We here at YENSA Beauty always recommend going in with a rejuvenating moisturizer that has nothing but the best ingredients to tend to that fresh surface layer of skin.

We know that exfoliating can be tricky business. Be mindful, do your research and find your skin's yen!
