Want to know the secret to a flawless base application? We thought that you would never ask!

Well, we guess it’s not really a secret as this point. By now you’ve probably seen countless makeup tutorials of beauty gurus creating flawless looks using one small sponge throughout the entire process. If you’re not quite sure what that tool is just yet, let us be the first to introduce to you… the beauty sponge.

The great thing about beauty sponges is that they can be used for all steps of skin. This means that you can use your sponge to apply concealer, foundation, liquid blush, powder, contours and even skincare. We know... awesome, right? What’s even greater is that we have included a step-by-step guide on how you can use your sponge to achieve the most incredible, flawless finish that your skin has ever had.

Now, grab your YENSA beauty sponge and let’s get to work.

Step 1. Wet your sponge.

The first thing you’re going to want to do is wet your beauty sponge and squeeze out the excess water until it has grown in size. Squeezing out your sponge is crucial, because too much water can dilute the product and cause for a cakey, not-so-cute textured application. How damp your sponge is will determine the coverage that you get— if you want to achieve that ultimate coverage, ensure that your sponge is as damp as possible without drying it out. A wet sponge allows for a natural, streak free and skin-on-skin finish.

Step 2. Blend to perfection.

For the sake of beginners, let’s begin by applying your base with a makeup sponge. What you’re going to do is start by dotting your makeup onto your face (you can also use the back of your hand and dip your beauty blender as you go). Next, blend your base by dabbing the sponge in tiny movements all over your skin until the product has been evenly distributed.

Pro tip: use the larger side of the sponge for foundation application and the smaller side for your concealer.

Step 3. Clean your sponge.

Now, keep in mind that this is a sponge that is capable of soaking up product, bacteria, dirt and whatever is floating around in your airspace. If you are using this multi-tasking tool daily—as most of us are— then it’s crucial that you clean your sponge at least once a week to prevent breakouts. It’s also recommended that you replace your sponge every 3 months.
